The Navy League’s Monterey Peninsula Council President, Rod Collins, and Susan McLaughlin, Council Vice President, attended the Coast Guard Change of Command ceremony at US Coast Guard Station Monterey, in Monterey, on June 10, 2011. The lawn in front of the Station boathouse was set up with a tent and seating for the attendees. A reception followed at Station Monterey.

LCDR Michael P. Kahle transferred command of the Station to LT Ronald J. Kooper, the new Commander, USCG Station Monterey. LCDR Kahle’s assignment to George Washington University, Washington D.C. immediately followed the change of command. LT Kooper assumes command of Station Monterey from the District Eight Command Center, New Orleans, Louisiana where he served as a command duty officer, then as command center chief.

CAPT Cynthia Stowe, U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, was the guest speaker for the ceremony. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco oversees all day-to-day Coast Guard operations throughout Northern California, Nevada, Utah and a small part of Wyoming.
Navy League Monterey’s US Naval Sea Cadet unit, the Chesty Puller BN led by LCDR Tony Saucedo, provided the color guard for the ceremony

The Change of Command Ceremony is a tradition that restates to the crew, the continuity of authority of the command. It is a formal transfer of responsibility and authority from one commander to the next. The Change of Command takes place with the reading of the orders.

The Change of Command grants an opportunity to recognize achievements and service of the Commanding Officer, while welcoming aboard the Prospective Commanding Officer.
