Our theme this year is Hollywood and The Battle of Midway and our guest speaker is THE Navy expert on television, film and documentary production – the director of the Navy’s Hollywood office (officially called NAVINFO WEST) – Commander Bob Anderson, USN (Ret.).
Bob has worked on JAG, NCIS, 24, FAITH OF MY FATHERS, TIGER CRUISE and he received the California Film Commission’s ON LOCATION Award in 2002.
We have several special guests for the Dining Out, including aviation cadets from the Del Monte Pre-Flight School, and the deadline for RSVP’s has been extended to June 2.

A unique experience awaits you
The Monterey Navy League has been invited to tour the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf — the nation’s newest, state-of-the-art cutter — on Saturday, May 9, 2009.
The USCGC Bertholf, commissioned August 2008, is the flagship of the new National Security Cutter class ship for the Coast Guard. It will depart Alameda in June for its first deployment.
The cost of the tour is $20.00 per person, which includes lunch. Tour attendees must arrange their own transportation to the ship, anchored at Coast Guard Island in Alameda, CA. We will meet for lunch at the Island’s Galley promptly at noon, then will tour the ship at 1 p.m.
Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and clothing, dress in layers because the weather can be unpredictable and be prepared to climb ship ladders during the tour.

On March 27th the Commandant for the United States Coast Guard, Admiral Thad Allen, came to Monterey to deliver the mid year graduation address at the Naval Postgraduate School. While in Monterey, he visited USCG Station Monterey where he presented a summary of his ‘State of the Coast Guard’ address delivered earlier in the year in Washington D.C. The NLUS Monterey Peninsula Council President John Sanders and Vice President Susan McLaughlin were honored to have an invitation to the meeting from the station CO, Lt. Mike Kahle. Navy League member and US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla Commander Tony Budlong and US Coast Guard Auxiliary Division Commander Mark McLaughlin also attended.
We learned that the Commandant was tasking the Coast Guard to no longer do ‘more with less’, but to “do your best with what you’ve got”. He talked about the reorganization of the service, and the Cutter acquisition program currently underway, and answered questions from the Station. He also discussed the importance of social networking in today’s military and informed the audience he has set up a blog, and a Facebook account to help communicate more widely with his command and the public.

In the March Board Council meeting, members voted to hold an informal social this month at the Black Bear Diner in Monterey. We’re trying this format to provide an evening forum because we want to know what is important for you. What initiatives would you like our Council to focus on? What are your suggestions for fundraising and other programs?
Board Secretary Katherine Mitchell contacted the Black Bear’s management and they are generously providing their meeting room at no cost. They are also providing you with many options for the evening. You can order a la carte from the menu and your order can be as modest as beverages or a full dinner. There is also plenty of parking in the well-lit lot adjacent to the diner.
So please join us for an evening of good company and friendship. We need your participation so that we can strengthen our Council and enable us to be more successful in the coming months.

Naval Postgraduate School student Lt. Alisha Hamilton received the Navy League Award for Highest Academic Achievement from Monterey Peninsula Council President John Sanders on March 17. Hamilton, a surface warfare officer who earned a master’s degree in national security affairs, was commended for her bearing, motivation and community involvement as well as her 3.91 grade point average.
Her thesis, “Defending the Amazon: Conservation, Development and Security in Brazil,” examined the critical role of the military in Amazonian policy. She observed that, “Guaranteeing Brazil’s borders and national security, the military views its infiltration of the Amazon as part of its mission. It also sees development and population increase as tools the government must use to increase sovereignty over the Amazon.” Hamilton said military concerns must be addressed before development policy in the Amazon can be changed.
Lt. Alisha Hamilton receives the Monterey Peninsula Council Navy League Award for highest academic achievement.
Hamilton’s next assignment is on the Joint Staff at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In a thank you note to Sanders and past Council President Susan McLaughlin, she wrote, “I really enjoyed last year’s Memorial Day service out with the Coast Guard. Best wishes to you, Master Chief Abel…and all the rest of the Navy League. Your recognition is truly appreciated!”

OUR SPEAKER:
CAPT Charles Calvano, USN(Ret), graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1963 and went on to earn a Master’s as well as a Naval Engineer’s Degree from MIT in 1970. He went on to a distinguished career with the US Navy as an Engineering Duty Officer specializing in ship design and construction. Professor Emeritus Calvano’s experience with the Naval Postgraduate School includes Director of the Total Ship Systems Engineering (TSSE) program (1991 – 2004), Associate Director Meyer Institute of Systems Engineering (2001 – 2004), and Professor, Systems Engineering Department (2007). From 2004 to 2007 he was assigned to the Office of Naval Research Global Office in London, where he was the Chief Scientist. Professor Calvano’s current teaching interests include Systems Engineering, Ship Design, and Naval Architecture. His awards include Fellow, Royal Institution of Naval Architecture, Meritorious Civilian Service Award, Fellow, of Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Richard Hamming Award for Interdisciplinary Achievement, Mechanical Engineering Department Outstanding Researcher, and Mechanical Engineering Department Outstanding Instructor. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers

Celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Great White Fleet’s visit to Monterey with the American Society for Naval Engineers. The dinner is Tuesday, April 15, 2008 6:00-9:00p.m and will feature a presentation by Professor Charles Calvano “The Ships of the Great White Fleet”.

Professor Chuck Calvano, was recently interviewed by PBS for a documentary on the Great White Fleet. His presentation covers the technological innovation that went into building the ships of the fleet.
