Our guest speaker,Tom Thiel, is Project Director for the Center for Living History USS Cyane project. The Cyane, built in Boston Navy Yard in 1837, did several tours on the West Coast. She first sailed for duty to the Mediterranean, but in 1844 she was cleared for the Pacific Station. The Cyane was stationed on the west coast for the Mexican war, and on July 7, 1846, her commanding officer, Captain William Mervine, led a detachment of Marines and sailors ashore, who hoisted the American flag at the Customs House, laying claim to the city of Monterey and all of Northern California.

The Center for Living history took on the Cyane project, because the ships like her brought scientific and exploring expeditions from Spain, France, England and Russia to Monterey, making it a focal point for international studies as it is today.

Tom will discuss the ship building project and its importance to the Monterey Bay area.

Battle of Midway/Dining Out

This year’s Dining Out will be held in the Naval Postgraduate School’s El Prado Room — once the famous Hotel Del Monte’s Bali Room prior to World War II and a recreation room during the war where young aviation cadets of the Del Monte Pre-Flight School shared a few brief moments of comaraderie and relaxation as they trained for air combat in the Pacific theatre. This is a truly fitting place to commemorate the Sailors and Marines who fought so valiantly at Midway in June 1942.

I hope you will make your reservations now and join us for this important evening. And, if possible, please consider sponsoring a Monterey High School Navy Junior ROTC student and help shape a new generation of young men and women who are dedicated to national service.

The Ball will be held in the McNitt Ballroom, Naval Postgraduate School, on Saturday, April 17.  Menu options are:

- Herbs and Mushroom Salmon with Chive Cream

- Del Monte Stuffed Chicken Breast

Meet the COs of Monterey

The Pearl Harbor Remembrance Dinner was a great success with more than 100 attendees, including eight Pearl Harbor veterans. Several Navy Leaguers – Adm. Hank Mauz, Bettina and Neal Hotelling, Gary Laughlin, Jackie Wilson and myself – along with the Monterey Bay Commandery of the Naval Order of the United States, sponsored Sea Cadets for the evening. The CIDD Monterey Navy Choir provided stirring music and Naval War College Professor Jon Czarnecki gave a passionate keynote talk.

Captain Ken Johnson and Lt. Bill Howie surprised everyone as the Naval Order presented silver forks from the wardroom of the USS ARIZONA (BB-39) to each of the Pearl Harbor survivors and encouraged them to pass it along to future generations in their families.

It was a heartwarming event and you can relive it or view it for the first time on our Navy League Remembrance Dinner DVD for just $20. Contact John Sanders – and order copies for yourself and your friends.

The dinner will be at the Monterey Elk’s Club, 150 Mar Vista Drive. Reception at 1800 hours followed by dinner at 1900. There will be the traditional Christmas wine-drawing following dinner to help support the Monterey Navy League Sea Cadets. The dinner will be catered by the Peninsula acclaimed East of Eden Grapes of Wrath of Pacific Grove and will feature Grilled Tri-Tip, Salmon with sun dried tomato pesto, or Vegetarian Portobello mushroom Pasta. Cost is $40.00 per person which includes Caesar Salad and Chocolate layered Napoleon. Special Holiday music is being arranged so don’t miss this great Remembrance Dinner.
