70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor attack honors Monterey sailors entombed in USS Arizona Memorial
“Remember Pearl Harbor” was a battle cry that echoed throughout the hard fought
campaigns of World War II. In the Oak Grove Neighborhood next to the Hotel Del
Monte, site of today’s Naval Postgraduate School, gold stars were hung in the windows
of three homes as a silent reminder of the young Sailors who fought bravely aboard their
ship, the USS Arizona, on December 7, 1941.
The powerful human story of one of those sailors, Seaman 1st Class Thomas Trovato, will
be presented in the Pearl Harbor 2011 Remembrance Dinner on Friday, December 2, at
the Elk’s Lodge, 150 Mar Vista Drive, Monterey.
Trovato’s nephew, Mike Trovato, Jr., will be keynote speaker for the dinner organized by
the Monterey Navy League and Monterey Bay Commandery of the Naval Order of the
United States.
Trovato and lifelong Oak Grove friends – Seaman 1st Class Jack Hazdovac and Yeoman
2nd Class Michael Criscuolo – enlisted in the Navy together, went to boot camp together
and served together aboard the battleship USS Arizona. They are among 1,102 Sailors
and Marines entombed in the USS Arizona Memorial.

An Excerpt from the 2010 Pearl Harbor Remembrance Dinner
Ms. Clara Foster spoke at last December’s Pearl Harbor Remembrance dinner.
She tells a story of meeting a group of young boys, in 1928, when she started school on the Monterey Peninsula. She relates how the bombing of Pearl Harbor affected them all.
